In the 1980s, Gao Jialin, a young man living in Gaojiagou, northern Shaanxi Province, was known to everyone in the village as the "top scholar" in reading since he was a child. 劇情简介：
八十年代，生活在陝北高家溝的青年高加林打小就是村裡人人皆知的讀書「狀元」。雖然家境貧寒，但他飽讀詩書心比天高，暗下決心要擺脫黃土地。高考是他改變命運的唯一機會，不料卻意外落榜。他奮發圖強成為民辦小學教師，教師編製又被擠走。高加林跌入人生的谷底，後在劉巧珍的鼓勵下振作並堅持寫作，燃起人生希望，還與巧珍萌生愛情。加林叔父回村間接提供了加林到縣城當記者的機會。他在縣城與志同道合的同學黃亞萍相遇，鄉下姑娘巧珍的默默守護與上海姑娘黃亞萍的熱烈示愛讓他陷入難以抉擇的兩難之境。幾度掙扎，幾次抉擇，他靠著一支筆帶到了上海。命運的考驗接二連三，高加林在而立之年竟得知當年自己的大學名額被好友雙星頂替。即便如此，加林也沒有被打敗，他順應時代努力學習新知識，努力奮鬥，歷經世事變遷，在時代浪潮中譜寫了平凡人不平凡的人生故事。
